I put a lot of thought into trying to figure out what the word gay means to me when I call someone gay, and this is what I think is my thought process. Being gay isn't optimal because there's no advantage to being gay over being attracted to everyone, there's also no advantage to being straight over being attracted to everyone, so in this way being straight is similar to being gay. They're both less convenient than being attracted to everyone, and I will illustrate that here. Attraction to all people: Around 100% of people (minus the percentage that is gay and of the opposite sex) are your potential lovers, and you can also can have babies who share genetic makeup from both parents with around half your lovers Straight: Around 50% of people are your potential lovers (minus the percentage that is gay), and you can have babies who share genetic makeup from both parents with all of them. Gay: Around 50% of people are your potential lovers (minus the percentage that is straight). As seen here with this objective analysis, being gay isn't the optimal sexual orientation in terms of convenience. So when I call someone gay, I'm basically saying that they're not convenient. I don't necessarily expect anyone to change their sexual orientation, however I do expect everyone to develop themselves and be open to new ideas. The amount of control we have over our sexual orientation isn't certain. I'm not entirely sure this is what's intuitively happening in my head when I call someone gay, but it makes the most sense to me. I put 30 minutes into writing this and will be saving it for future use, LOGICAL feedback is appreciated so I can make further revisions.
